It is tradition that the Madonna appears to the most humble, and in this case the rule is no exception: it was a farmer from the small village of Sambusita, in Val Serina, who was chosen. The Blessed Virgin asked for the construction of a church and to indicate with precision the place where it should be built, she performed a miracle: she made an olive branch sprout from a beech stump. The event had such a wide echo that it led to the construction of three churches over the course of little more than a century! Like a reliquary, in the first chapel the relic of the beech stump with the olive branch was placed, hidden by a marble slab beneath the altar.
