
Sacristies of the Basilica of San Martino ---
It is Gerolamo Quadrio, the architect of the Milan Cathedral, who designed the three sacristies housed in the Basilica of San Martino. Rare mastery and expressive power characterize all the rooms: entering the first one directly from the church, you will immediately be overwhelmed by a cascade of eighteenth-century stuccos and frescoes, by dense and redundant decoration, and by inlays and sculptures created by the Fantoni and Caniana families, two great families of artists of the era. The themes of the ornamental motifs are manifold: from Gospel episodes and stories of the New and Old Testament, to putti, masks, vegetable decorations such as intertwined branches, fruits and leaves, idyllic landscapes.
