Branzi cheese takes its name from the village in Alta Val Brembana where traditional production originated. It was the cooperative dairy that collected milk production from livestock that stayed in barns in the lower valley during winter or that had not gone up to the mountain pastures during summer. Branzi was an important center for dairy and cheese exchanges that, at the end of the alpine pasture season, took place during the San Matteo Fair.
