Fountain of S. Eufemia ---

The medieval city was divided into neighborhoods called Vicinie in Bergamo. Here we are in the Vicinia of Santa Eufemia. In every vicinia the fountain held fundamental importance for the life of the population. Strict regulations contained in municipal statutes protected the fountains and their pertinent structures. One could not build over the masonry arch, it was forbidden to tamper with basins and channels, and severe penalties were imposed on those who polluted the waters or abandoned waste under the vaults.
