Fontana del Vagine ---

Among the first fountains documented in the city's history, it was fed by springs located in the vicinity. Already in Roman times it was known as fons opacinus, a north-facing spring, because of its northward position. It appears that the spring enjoyed great fame for its healing qualities and that many foreigners would visit to admire it. According to the descriptions by Mosè del Brolo in Liber Pergaminus (1120-1180), its vaults, floor and walls were covered in marble. Both inhabitants and horses could draw water from the fountain; it had a washing area and a very large cistern.
