Alessandro Corti, born in 1910, grew up within his family's transport business. With carts and horses, they would haul large stones around, recovering them from rivers, for Italcementi. The return journey was made at night: the horses had by then learned the route and the drivers could sleep in makeshift hammocks attached beneath the carts. Alessandro, however, unlike his father, looked at those stones in a new way. "Dad was more refined. He was an artist and became a sculptor." This is what Germano tells us, one of Alessandro and Virginia's four sons, who along with Gualtiero, Fernando and Antonio carried on the family enterprise.
