Castello di Romano di Lombardia ---
The castle of Romano has a moat (though now dry), an access bridge, a square layout, high walls and towers at the corners. Its construction probably dates back to almost nine hundred years ago, but was subsequently modernized repeatedly until the eighteenth century. The current structure still reveals the different styles and different owners who succeeded one another over the centuries. For example, the battlements are mixed, both swallow-tail shaped (which indicated allegiance to the Ghibelline faction), and squared (typical instead of Guelph castles), a clear sign of how the castle was contested by the two warring sides. The walls speak to the tradition of the Padana plain, with their typical construction in red brick, which characterizes all the fortifications of that period in the region.
