Tower of Adalberto ---

From the late Carolingian period until the end of the 11th century, when power passed to the Municipality, the dominion of Bergamo was exercised in ever-increasing measure by the bishops. Bishop Adalberto, after the partial destruction of the defensive structures by King Arnulf in 894, is believed to have rebuilt the fortifications of the City in 904. On the basis of these hypotheses, local historians have also attributed the construction of the tower to the bishop, though it was in fact a noble residence dating from the 12th century. The tower is one of the few that survived among the dozens that once existed in the Upper City.
