Sanctuary of the Madonna d'Erbia ---

Located in Casnigo, on the Erbia mountain, the sanctuary is a testament to deep devotion to the Virgin Mary. There are many legends surrounding the origin of this sanctuary. According to one of the many legends, a highly venerated image depicting the Madonna of the Nativity was painted on the wall inside a local farmer's farmhouse, and the numerous pilgrims who came to venerate the image trampled the grass of the surrounding fields and, so one evening, the annoyed farmer defaced the painting with pickaxe blows which, however, reappeared during the night. Between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, a small church was built and blessed in 1813. The wall of the farmhouse bearing the venerated image was incorporated into the Sanctuary.
