Porta del Soccorso ---

The Porta del Soccorso owes its name to the role of "aid" it played in past centuries during emergencies: through this hidden passage, Bergamasques could enter and exit the city walls without being seen. In this way it was possible to catch enemies by surprise, attacking them from an unexpected point, or to escape in case of siege, or even to rush to defend the nearby Castello di San Vigilio. This gate was used only in critical situations: in peaceful times, neither goods nor people passed through it.
