Once known as Casa Littoria, dedicated to the city hero Antonio Locatelli and a highly symbolic headquarters of the local Fascist Party, the Palazzo della Libertà is located in the heart of Città Bassa. It serves as a monumental scenic backdrop to the homonymous Piazza, created during the urban renewal plan of the area where the ancient Ospedale S. Marco once stood, demolished in the 1930s. In 1936, to better redefine this empty space, a design competition was announced: the judging commission, which included Marcello Piacentini, author of the magnificent Centro Piacentiniano, decided to award the first prize to architect Alziro Bergonzo's project.
