GLENO DAM ---

There is a special place in the heart of Valle di Scalve (Bergamo) that, for all its inhabitants, represents a sort of watershed between what the valley was before and after the "Gleno disaster". In a landscape of absolute beauty, a natural depression surrounded by majestic peaks including Monte Gleno. On December 1st, 1923, the Gleno dam, an artificial barrier of 260 meters, failed to withstand the force of 6 million cubic meters of water pressing behind it. The dam's central pillar collapsed and, in less than 15 minutes, the massive body of water poured into the valley destroying everything in its path, aided in this terrible tragedy also by the frightening displacement of air that preceded it.
