As you walk along the central via Tasso in Bergamo bassa, you will hardly remain unmoved by the rustic facade of this church, dominated by an imposing bronze sculpture representing the descent of the Holy Spirit looming over the churchyard. The original structure of the building was part of a fourteenth-century monastic complex: the desire of a large group of wealthy fifteenth-century merchants to assert their social status not only through palaces but even through a church profoundly transformed it. The church's restructuring was very elaborate and involved, at different periods, the two greatest Bergamo architects: Pietro Isabello in the sixteenth century and Gian Battista Caniana in the eighteenth century.
