The original structure of the building was part of a fourteenth-century monastic complex: the desire of a large group of wealthy fifteenth-century merchants to assert their social status not only through palaces but even through a church profoundly transformed it. The church's restructuring was very elaborate and involved, at different periods, the two greatest Bergamo architects: Pietro Isabello in the sixteenth century and Gian Battista Caniana in the eighteenth century.
