Church of Santa Grata Inter Vites ---

The church is dedicated to Santa Grata, co-patroness of Bergamo, and is the original burial place of the Saint's body, which was entombed here until the year 1,000, when it was moved to another church of the same name located in via Arena, within the city walls. Originally dating from the fourteenth century, the building was destroyed two centuries later to make room for the Venetian Walls; it was then completely rebuilt in the eighteenth century. Wondering what "inter vites" means? You should know that the building stood in the countryside, in a place used for the cultivation of vineyards, which by the eighteenth century no longer existed. In front of the church you can see the impressive San Gottardo staircase, named after the complex located at the end of the climb that once housed a monastery suppressed in 1798.
